Ex-Kaizer Chiefs star was 'never worried' about Khanyisa Mayo's Amakhosi debut but sounds warning for striker who 'understands football'

  • A scoring debut for Mayo

Khanyisa Mayo scored on his Kaizer Chiefs debut as Amakhosi were held to a 1-1 Premier Soccer League draw by Marumo Gallants at FNB Stadium on Wednesday.

The forward gave a hint of what to expect from him in his time at Amakhosi who are searching for a prolific scorer.

Former Chiefs winger Junior Khanye believes Mayo offered the Soweto giants what other forwards have been failing to deliver.

    What Khanye said

“Mayo gave them something other strikers didn’t have before,” said Khanye as per iDiski Times.
“I think the player is highly motivated to play for Kaizer Chiefs because of his father. You could see he gave it his all. They needed a player who knows how to play up front, and by that I mean you need a striker who understands football.
“The boy understands football, coming from the SuperSport development, did well at Cape Town City before leaving. I was never worried about his scoring, I was worried about the surroundings.”

    Pressure on Mayo to deliver

Chiefs have been looking for a consistent goal-scorer as the Soweto giants try to fix their problems in front of goal.

That puts pressure on Mayo to deliver amid competition from seven other forwards at Naturena.

So far this season, Chiefs have scored seven goals in as many league games, which could be a sign of a team struggling to find a reliable scorer.

    What next?

Chiefs now prepare for an assignment that could be their biggest test this season, with a CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round, second leg clash against Kabuscorp at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Their character will be under scrutiny to see if they can beat the Angolan side and turn the tables after losing 1-0 in the first leg last weekend.
