Pirates a stepping stone to greater things

Marshall Munetsi played for Orlando Pirates between 2017 and 2019 after arriving at the Soweto giants from Baroka FC, after also a stint at Ubuntu Cape Town.

The spell with the Buccaneers opened doors for him to be scouted by League 1 side Stade Reims, where he spent almost six years before his January 2025 transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Now a regular for the Premier League side, Munetsi feels it was Pirates who set him up for where he has reached now and wishes to play for them in future.

    Why Munetsi chooses Pirates

"I love the chairman, even up to now, we still get in touch, we communicate," said Munetsi on Mike Morton Talks Football.
"Even the last time when I was on holiday I came to see him. So, I don't think I will probably be able to come to South Africa and sign for another team that is not Pirates.
"That is how much that team means to me. They took me all the way from Cape Town, they gave me an opportunity and they propelled me to be in the state I am in," added the Zimbabwe international.
“So, don't worry when I come back to South Africa one day, probably I will. I don't think I will ever be able to do it for another team besides Pirates."

PSL not churning out EPL material

Premier Soccer League clubs are struggling to transfer players to the EPL, which used to be home to the likes of Lucas Radebe, Benni McCarthy, Shaun Bartlett, Steven Pienaar, Mark Fish and Aaron Mokoena.
In Southern Africa, the three most notable players currently plying their trade in the EPL are Bafana Bafana and Burnley forward Lyle Foster, Mozambique's Reinildo Mandava of Sunderland FC and Munetsi.

    What next for Munetsi?

At 29 and currently enjoying his club career in Europe, it might take a few more years before Munetsi considers returning to Africa.

Should he continue with his impressive performances for Wolves, he might attract the interest of a UEFA Champions League playing club in England or abroad.
