    WHAT HAPPENED?

Egypt captain Mohamed Salah is on the brink of leapfrogging former South Africa international Gordon Hodgson in Liverpool’s all-time goalscorers list.

Since he arrived at the Premier League giants from Italy's AS Roma in June 2017, Salah has been a consistent performer and is considered one of the greatest players in the history of the club.

Hodgson, who played twice for South Africa in 1924, scored 241 goals in 378 matches across all competitions for the Reds - making him the club's third-highest goalscorer.

Salah equaled the Benoni, East Rand-born footballer's tally of 241 goals for Liverpool when he netted in Sunday's Premier League match against Manchester City, with the North African superstar having done so in 387 matches.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Salah’s remarkable performances this season have ignited conversations among football fans and pundits about whether he could become the second African player to win a Ballon d’Or after George Weah of Liberia.

This season, the 32-year-old has already scored 30 goals in 38 matches in all competitions for Liverpool, who are currently placed at the top of the Premier League table, having also finished at the top of the Uefa Champions League's league phase standings.

Wales legend Ian Rush is Liverpool's record goalscorer with 346 goals followed by former England international Roger Hunt, who found the back of the net 285 times for the Merseyside giants.

    WHAT NEXT?

Salah could surpass Hodgson’s tally on Wednesday evening when Liverpool face Newcastle United in a league match at Anfield Stadium.

As for Hodgson, he became the Port Vale manager in 1946 after retiring from professional football in 1940 and would hold the position until he died in 1951.
