Douglas Costa, Jorginho & the Serie A Team of the Season

Only promoted to Roma's first-choice goalkeeper after Wojciech Szczesny's switch to Juventus last summer yet Alisson is arguably the most complete goalkeeper in the world right now, one being courted by all of Europe's top clubs.

The Brazil No.1 not only has wonderful reflexes – his Serie A save percentage is currently 79.26% – he's also excellent on the ball. Indeed, nobody has had more successful sweeper-keeper actions (39) in Italy's top flight this term.

It's fair to say to say that Joao Cancelo's loan move to Inter has been a resounding success, made all the more impressive by the fact that the Valencia-owned right-back suffered ligament damage while on international duty just after the Serie A season had started.

The Portugal ace understandably took some time to regain his place in the Inter starting line-up but once he did, he established himself as one of the most dependable members of Luciano Spalletti's defence, as well as contributing three assists and one goal to the Nerazzurri cause.

One of the signings of the Serie A season, Inter's Milan Skriniar is now regarded as one of the best young defenders in world football after a stellar debut campaign at San Siro. 

Indeed, the €20 million summer signing from Sampdoria was being linked with a €65m move to Manchester City by the winter break due to his sensational form and the Nerazzurri undoubtedly face a fight to hold on to a centre-half who does everything well.

He ranks joint-second among Serie A defenders in terms of tackles won, fifth for duels won, sixth for clearances and eighth for blocks, as well as third in terms of successful passes. Oh, and he's also scored four goals for good measure!

Capital duo Stefan de Vrij and Federico Fazio have both been immense for Lazio and Roma, respectively, but the pivotal moment in Juventus' title triumph was arguably Medhi Benatia's return to the starting line-up, after an injury-interrupted start to the season. 

The Moroccan defender's recall coincided with a remarkable run of form which saw the suddenly solidified Bianconeri backline concede just once in 11 Serie A games, taking 31 of a maximum 33 points in the process. That streak proved integral to Juve's Scudetto success.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola hadn't planned on letting Aleksandar Kolarov leave last summer but be bowed to the 32-year-old's desire for regular first-team football, something the Catalan could no longer guarantee the Serbia international following Benjamin Mendy's arrival at the Etihad.

The dynamic Kolarov has shown just why Guardiola was so reluctant to lose him to Roma, racking up eight assists – more than any other defender – as well as netting two goals during a barnstorming debut season at the Stadio Olimpico.

Lucas Leiva is enjoying quite the Indian summer at Lazio but, as the man that makes Napoli tick, Jorginho gets the nod at the base of our midfield.

This season, the Brazil-born Italy international has only strengthened his case to be considered the world's best playmaker.

No player across Europe's 'Big Five' leagues has made more successful passes this season and it was not in the least bit surprising to learn that Pep Guardiola wants the 26-year-old at Manchester City next season.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is probably the most coveted midfielder in Europe, after a sensational third season at the Stadio Olimpico with Lazio. 

The dynamic 23-year-old Serbian, who has been linked with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, has played a pivotal role in the Biancocelesti's push for a top-four finish in Serie A, with a career-best 11 league goals, and three assists.

There is absolutely no doubt that Douglas Costa has been Juventus' star man during the title run-in, consistently making a difference, whether deployed from the start or from the bench.

Indeed, despite only starting 17 of the 29 games he's been involved in, the brilliant Brazilian winger has created 12 goals – only Luis Alberto has more assists (14) – scored four himself, and ranks second for dribbles completed in Serie A, with 99.

Given Paulo Dybala's inconsistency, our No.10 jersey goes to the revelation of the 2017-18 campaign, Luis Alberto, who has been so good for Lazio that there has been transfer talk of a return to Catalunya for the former Barcelona B attacking midfielder.

The Liverpool flop tops the Serie A assists charts (14) and has also netted 11 goals, with his remarkable rise to prominence earning the 25-year-old a first Spain cap last November.

Napoli's Scudetto dream may have died but Lorenzo Insigne certainly can't be held accountable. 

As a Neapolitan, he sometimes bears the brunt of the San Paolo's frustration but the winger is the most creative player in Serie A, having made a whopping 93 chances this season – only Dmitri Payet and Kevin De Bruyne have racked up more across Europe's 'Big Five' leagues. 

Insigne has also made nine goals, and scored eight himself, which sees him pip Atalanta ace Papu Gomez to our left-wing berth.

Mauro Icardi is enjoying the most prolific season of his career, Edin Dzeko has carried the Roma attack both in Italy and in Europe, but Ciro Immobile has been the best all-round striker in Serie A this season.

The Lazio striker could yet miss the end of the season through injury but, at this point, he has not only scored more goals than anyone else (29), he has also racked up nine assists (joint-seventh overall), meaning he has been involved in more goals than anyone else in Serie A.

So, there you have it, our Serie A Team of the Season for 2017-18!
