    WHAT HAPPENED?

Wydad Athletic Club coach Rhulani Mokwena has commented on the idea of adding a local assistant coach to the club's backroom team.

Currently, the former Mamelodi Sundowns tactician's technical staff consists of only South Africans.

Amidst the club's struggles since the start of the season, there have been suggestions that Wydad should rope in a local coach to help Mokwena.

The 37-year-old has now discussed what he thinks about adding a local man to his technical team.

    WHAT MOKWENA SAID

“The president knows my opinion, it’s a bit internal, so I’ll leave it to the club,” Mokwena said, per iDiski Times

“In every club when we leave, we want to be here forever, but we know we’re going to leave, we have to leave with some form of investment for the country, so that the work continues, because we’ve got a very young squad.

“We need a technical team that can continue from us after our period, so it’s important that we have a local coach. But that’s the process for the management, it’s a question for the management and the board.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mokwena joined Wydad at the start of the current campaign after parting ways with Sundowns despite an impressive 2023/2024 season.

Upon his arrival at the Botola Pro League giants, the Soweto-born trainer brought Sinethemba Badela with him to the club as his first assistant.

Moreover, he took along fitness trainer Sibusiso Mahlangu and performance analyst Sibusiso Makitla who were part of his backroom staff at the Brazilians.

Additionally, former Highlands Park mentor Alan Freese, and ex-Chippa United's Sean Louw, joined the club as technical director and goalkeeper coach, respectively.
