    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Kaizer Chiefs star Junior Khanye has criticised Mamelodi Sundowns forward Arthur Sales for his worrying display in the Caf Champions League game on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old center forward started ahead of fan-favourite Peter Shalulile in Downs' disappointing goalless draw against AS Maniema Union in the group stage opener in Tshwane.

During his post-match analysis, Khanye raised doubts about Sales' proficiency and effectiveness when it comes to scoring goals.

    WHAT KHANYE SAID

"If you are an international player and you come to South Africa, you must show up. I want to find out what Sales' quality is, what is the quality of the guy?," Khanye asked on iDiski TV

"Sundowns have been lately playing a different style, going wide to do crosses to find him in the box. The guy must move off the ball and set himself free so that his teammates can find him.

"But what I see every time is that when the ball arrives in the box, it can't find him."

The former dribbling wizard has also claimed that Mngqithi's team will be ordinary should Lucas Ribeiro Costa get injured.

"Let me tell you, if Ribeiro can get injured, any team will be able to beat Mamelodi Sundowns," said the Daveyton resident.

"We have to be honest, Sundowns lacked creativity, there was no sense of urgency, they were not good."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sales, who joined Sundowns in a big transfer at the start of this season, appears to still be settling into Manqoba Mngqithi's squad.

Sundowns paid a club record R63 million for the left-footed player's services when he joined the Tshwane giants from Belgium's Lommel.

Sales is yet to score a goal, despite making seven appearances in all competitions for the Tshwane giants, but he has provided two assists.

Conversely, Ribeiro, who hails from the same country as Sales, has scored seven goals in 14 matches across all competitions this term.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SALES?

South American player, Matías Esquivel, was loaned out to Argentina's Talleres in September after failing to meet expectations at Sundowns last season.

Sales might experience the same fate if he fails to improve his performance.
