    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates advanced to the Nedbank Cup semi-finals after defeating SuperSport United 5-4 on penalties in the tournament’s quarter-final clash at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

The match ended with a 2-2 draw after extra-time. Bafana Bafana forward Evidence Makgopa and rising star Mbekezeli Mbokazi scored for the Buccaneers.

Conversely, former Pirates striker Terrence Dzvukamanja and midfielder Gape Moralo found the back of the net for Matsatsantsa.

Following the match, Pirates coach Jose Riveiro reacted to the match, lavishing praise on goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, who saved two penalties.

    WHAT RIVEIRO SAID

"It’s one of the possibilities in a knockout game, there are only two possible results in these types of games if you can not make it in the 120 minutes, you have to go to penalties and do your best,” Riveiro said.

"We did a good job in that space, and again happy to be in the semi-finals. It’s his role in the penalty shoot-out, he has to stay there between the posts and try to catch at least one more than the opponent, he’s been doing well in that scenario on recent occasions in penalties.

"Today again he [Sipho Chaine] did an excellent job, together with the analysis department, with the goalkeeper coach, with everyone in that space, helping him to make the right decisions."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The victory for Pirates against Gavin Hunt's SuperSport ensured that the Soweto giants kept their Nedbank Cup three-peat dream after claiming the latest two editions of the tournament.

Bucs might face Kaizer Chiefs, who triumphed over Stellenbosch 3-1 in another quarter-final matchup on Saturday evening at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Furthermore, other possible opponents for Riveiro's team are Mamelodi Sundowns, Sekhukhune United, Marumo Gallants, and Durban City, who have yet to play their matches in this round.
