Confirmed! Kaizer Chiefs bolster squad with signing of former Cape Town Spurs captain Asanele Velebayi

Asanele Velebayi’s arrival at Kaizer Chiefs follows a ruling by the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC), which declared the 22-year-old midfielder a free agent after a dispute with his former club, Cape Town Spurs. 

The legal tussle began after Spurs suffered relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship to the ABC Motsepe League. Although Velebayi still had time left on his contract, he argued that the drop to the amateur ranks meant he was no longer bound by the agreement.

Determined to keep hold of their player, the Urban Warriors resisted, but the PSL DRC ultimately sided with Velebayi earlier this week, paving the way for the Glamour Boys to secure his signature. 

The Cape Town-born player isn’t the only player who has been caught up in a contractual dispute. Rising star Luke Baartman is also embroiled in a similar legal battle with Spurs and could soon be declared a free agent.  

If the ruling goes in his favour, Baartman is widely expected to follow in Velebayi’s footsteps and be unveiled as a new Amakhosi signing. 

With Velebayi now on board to strengthen Amakhosi’s squad, attention turns to their upcoming Premier Soccer League clash against Polokwane City on Wednesday, 13 August.  

All eyes will be on whether the 22-year-old will be handed his debut and given the chance to don the iconic Black & Gold in front of the Chiefs faithful.
