'I’m not worried' - Club América's Andre Jardine provides update on Luis Ángel Malagón's injury after Las Águilas snap losing streak and clinch second place

América returned to winning ways with a dominant 5-0 thrashing of a weak Mazatlán FC side, who came into the match already eliminated. The clash, part of Matchday 17 of the Clausura 2025, was settled with braces from Víctor Dávila and Álvaro Fidalgo, plus a goal from Rodrigo Aguirre.

Just as head coach André Jardine had hoped, his team managed to put their rough April behind them, closing out the regular season with a convincing performance that brings optimism heading into the Liguilla.

With this result, Jardine’s squad snapped two negative streaks: five straight matches without a win and three consecutive games without scoring in Liga MX. The victory lifted América to 34 points, securing second place in the Clausura standings.

The bad news for América was the injury to goalkeeper Luis Ángel Malagón, who suffered an ankle sprain and had to leave the match at halftime.

In the post-match press conference, coach André Jardine confirmed it was indeed a sprain, but clarified that the substitution was made as a precaution.

“Both [Luis Ángel Malagón and Sebastián Cáceres] were subbed off as a precaution - Malagón has an ankle sprain, but I’m not worried. Cáceres came off due to fatigue,” said the Brazilian coach after América’s dominant win. “We have an important stretch coming up that will define our fate in the Liguilla, but we’re calm and confident in the squad.”

The Brazilian coach will give the squad three days off, with training set to resume next Wednesday afternoon as the team begins preparations for the Liguilla, where they’ll be chasing their fourth consecutive title.

To maintain match rhythm ahead of the quarterfinals - scheduled for May 7 and 8 - the team is expected to play a friendly match at Coapa.

The 17-day break will also be key in helping injured players recover, including Henry Martín, who will have gone two months without playing by the time the quarterfinals kick off.

“Some players need time, others need training - like Henry Martín, who will return to training next week. He needs at least 10 days, and he’ll have more than that. This break came at a perfect time for us,” said Jardine during the post-match press conference following the big win.

Las Águilas secured second place and will now enjoy a 17-day break before playing the quarterfinals, where they’ll face the winner of the Play-In matchup between Monterrey and Pachuca.

The first leg of the series is set to be played on May 7 or 8.
