    WHAT HAPPENED?

South Africa have not been cleared yet for a case involving Bafana Bafana's midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who featured against Lesotho in the 2026 World Cup qualifier, although he was not supposed to.

The dust looks to have settled for some time now, but the matter is yet to be decided, and Safa is waiting for Fifa to make their ruling.

This revelation was made on Tuesday when Safa officials, led by President Danny Jordan, the federation's CEO, Lydia Monyepao, CFO Gronie Hluyo, and executive member Poobie Govindasamy, appeared before the committee on Sport, Arts, and Culture.

The FA's officials were put to task over the Mokoena saga, and they said an answer from Fifa has not come yet.

    WHAT SAFA SAID

“That matter is still under investigation. It will be dealt with… When Fifa makes that decision, then only can we complete the investigation,” Govindasamy answered as per IOL.

Govindasamy also explained how the mistake occurred.

“Fifa, Caf and the match commissioner were not informed of the yellow cards. When you get to a match commissioner’s meeting, that’s when you’re alerted to this," he said.

"Even Safa was not alerted. It came up after the game against Lesotho.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

South Africa face a potential punishment where three points could be deducted from their World Cup qualifying campaign.

This came after the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder was fielded against Lesotho despite the fact that he was suspended.

He had collected two yellow cards from the qualifiers against Benin and Zimbabwe and thus was not eligible to play against Lesotho.

Bafana lead Group C with a five-point gap over second-placed rivals.

    WHAT NEXT FOR BAFANA?

South Africa can only look into the future, hoping that a decision from Fifa will favour them and not jeopardise their World Cup dream.

South Africa will engage in the remaining qualifiers in September and October. The 1996 African champions will tackle Lesotho on September 1 before a game against Nigeria a week later.

Zimbabwe and Rwanda qualifiers will be played on October 6 and October 13, respectively.
