Caf to unveil new trophy in Johannesburg ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns' Champions League final showdown against Pyramids FC

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has announced it will unveil a new Champions League trophy ahead of the final showdown between Mamelodi Sundowns and Pyramids FC.

According to the continental football federation, the event will be hosted in Johannesburg, and it will be attended by African football legends and this season's finalists.

"The Confédération Africaine de Football (Caf), in partnership with TotalEnergies, will unveil a new trophy and identity for the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League ahead of the highly anticipated two-legged final of the competition," Caf announced.

"The new trophy will be unveiled on Thursday, May 22, at the TotalEnergies offices in Johannesburg, South Africa, and will be attended by African football legends and the two participating clubs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Pyramids FC."

Caf says the timing to unveil the new trophy is meant to add more fanfare in the buildup of the highly anticipated final.

"The timing of the unveiling adds to the excitement and grandeur surrounding the decider, offering African football fans a glimpse of what will be at stake over the two legs in Tshwane and Cairo over the next two weeks," Caf added.

"This event signifies a new, bold, and exciting chapter for African club football, as Caf continues to elevate the profile and image of CAF Interclub Competitions."

Sundowns are looking for their second continental star, while Pyramids are hunting for their first-ever Champions League trophy.

The Brazilians go into the final motivated, as they have already defended the Premier Soccer League, and full focus is now on the Champions League campaign.

The Tshwane giants eliminated Al Ahly, perennial African champions, and this makes them the pre-final favourites.

On the other hand, Pyramids eliminated Orlando Pirates in a dramatic encounter in Cairo to book their first-ever final appearance in Africa’s elite club competition.

Sundowns will host Pyramids on May 24 at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium before the second leg that will take place at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium in Cairo on June 1.

Before then, Downs and Pyramids will have to complete their domestic assignments. The PSL champions will be in action on May 18 against Magesi FC.

Pyramids, on the other hand, will entertain Petrojet in an Egyptian Premier League contest on May 17.
