  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Arsenal are in the hunt for the Premier League title for the third straight season but it looks likely that the Gunners might finish as runners-up yet again as Liverpool are six points clear with a game in hand. However, Arteta will not be giving up hope yet but many need more attacking reinforcements if his team are to pip the Reds to glory.

    WHAT MERSON SAID

Arsenal legend Merson has now urged Arsenal to sign Isak either this January or in the summer, with the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz not living up the standards expected of strikers at top European clubs.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Gunners legend said: “If I was Arsenal and I had the money, I’d go out and buy Isak. I’d break the bank for him. He’s the best of the best, he takes Arsenal to the next level.

“I’m looking at the all-round picture, I’m looking at next season as well. I think if we can get hold of Isak who is the best in the business at the moment, I think that would be a massive coup for Arsenal."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Newcastle United have reportedly placed a price tag of greater than £150m (€181m/$189m) on Isak if any club wants to sign him in the January transfer window. Additionally, the Swedish striker does not appear to be too keen on leaving the Magpies as he told reporters in Sweden: "I am commenting on my situation in Newcastle, and I have never had any problem there. I am fully focused on my task there and that we will have a fantastic season. There are still great opportunities for that. I have no thoughts about anything else."

    WHAT NEXT FOR ISAK?

Isak's lofty price tag is likely to ward off admirers for the time being, although if he can continue to bang in the goals then Newcastle may find offers arriving. The Swede will be in action next when Newcastle take on Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, January 4.
