    WHAT HAPPENED?

South Africa managed a hard-fought 2-0 win over Zambia in the final match of the tri-nations tournament at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday.

After a goalless first half, Banyana found a way late in the second half, with goals from Bongeka Gamede and Jermaine Seoposenwe securing the win against their regional rivals.

Gamede scored in the 74th minute, and the second one was added by Seoposenwe, who came close to finding the back of the net on three occasions in the first half.

Zambia were left frustrated after failing to capitalise on their chances, especially the ones wasted by Barbara Banda and Rachel Kundananji.

South Africa won the inaugural tournament with six points.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The game against Zambia concludes South Africa's engagement in the inaugural three-nations series.

Banyana fought hard for a 3-2 win over Botswana in their first encounter last week, while the Copper Queens were held to a draw by the same side over the weekend.

The tri-nation tournament was organised to sharpen Banyana, Zambia, and Botswana for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals set to be held in Morocco in July.

South Africa, the defending champions, will face Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania in Group C. Zambia are in Group A alongside Morocco, Senegal, and DR Congo, while Group B has Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana.

On July 11, South Africa will take on Tanzania before they conclude the group stage match against Mali on July 14.
