    WHAT HAPPENED?

Pachuca FC defeated Al Ahly 6-5 on penalties in the semi-final of the Fifa Intercontinental Cup to progress to the final in a match held at Stadium 974 on Saturday in Qatar.

Tuzos, as the Mexican club is nicknamed, and the Egyptian powerhouse could not find the net in regulation time as the game finished without goals.

The match went to penalties after neither team could score throughout the 120 minutes, and Al Ahly, unfortunately, ended up on the losing side the night after Khaled Abdelfattah failed to convert his penalty.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Marcel Koller’s team had defeated Al-Ain of the United Arab Emirates with a score of 3-0, while Pachuca had eliminated Brazil’s Botafogo with the same scoreline in Qatar in the quarter-finals of the World Championship to advance to the semi-finals.

Bafana Bafana vice-captain Percy Tau was brought on in second-half stoppage time and he too was unable to assist Al Ahly in achieving a win.

However, the out-of-favor Ahly star successfully converted his penalty, although it did not aid the team in securing a positive outcome.

    WHAT NEXT FOR AL AHLY?

Al Ahly will now focus on the Caf Champions League and Egyptian Premier League as they aim to defend their titles.

Pachuca, on the other hand, will face Madrid in the final on Wednesday.

The Red Devils will host Khanyisa Mayo’s CR Belouizdad at the Cairo International Stadium in their third Champions League group-stage match on December 22.
