Nigeria suffered an early setback just seven minutes in, as full-back Ola Aina was forced off through injury, paving the way for Bright Osayi-Samuel to take his place. South Africa seized control of the opening exchanges, dictating possession and pressing high up the pitch. Their dominance paid off in the 24th minute when Teboho Mokoena released the energetic Mohau Nkota down the right flank. The winger delivered a dangerous low cross into the area, which Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong inadvertently turned into his own net.

Despite struggling to keep hold of the ball for long periods, Nigeria clawed their way back into the contest just before the interval. In the 42nd minute, Calvin Bassey rose highest to meet a pinpoint delivery from Tom Dele-Bashiru, powering a header beyond Ronwen Williams to level the score at 1-1 heading into the break.

In the second half, the Super Eagles picked up where they had left off late in the first, continuing to press South Africa relentlessly. Hugo Broos was forced into a change just after the 60th minute, as Zuko Mdunyelwa appeared to struggle with a possible groin injury and was replaced by Thabiso Monyane.

As the match progressed, the hosts began to find some rhythm, taking advantage of Nigeria’s visible fatigue in the latter stages. Despite some encouraging play, the 1-1 scoreline held until the final whistle. The result keeps South Africa atop Group C with 17 points, while Nigeria are second with 11 points, edging Benin on goal difference.

    THE MVP

While the game itself delivered plenty of end-to-end action and talking points, credit must also go to the crowd, who turned out in impressive numbers on a Tuesday evening. Their energy and unwavering support helped create an electric atmosphere.

    THE BIG LOSER

A clash between South Africa and Nigeria is always intense, but the ongoing heated moments on the pitch and along the sidelines are not always a good look.
