Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos tips Relebohile Mofokeng to leave Orlando Pirates amid Barcelona links, but, 'I’m a little bit afraid, Rele will not be a player of Buccaneers anymore'

Relebohile Mofokeng has established himself into a key Orlando Pirates player.

That has earned him a Bafana Bafana spot and national team coach Hugo Broos feels the 20-year-old deserves to play out of South Africa.

Mofokeng has already been linked with Spanish giants Barcelona as well as Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“I see all the things around, Barcelona and Rangers and… [sighs] I’m a little bit afraid," said Broos as per iDiski Times.

“I just hope that the people around make the choice of the best sportive solution and not the best financial solution.

“I can just tell him [my opinion], but I don’t think I have that influence on the people around him.

“Okay, I think his parents want the best for him, that’s for sure. But there is another guy who wants to win a lot of money also, but that’s the problem," the Belgian added.

“But ok, let’s hope, maybe I talked too soon about that. We’ll see. I think in June, Rele will not be a player of Orlando Pirates anymore, but a good choice is very important.”

Mofokeng has regularly been linked with a move overseas following his impressive performances since breaking into Pirates PSL squad in May 2023.

After going for trials at Wolverhampton Wanderers, he is now reportedly a target of Spanish giants Barcelona.

It is now to be seen if he will still be with the Buccaneers next season but he should also take stock of players who have gone before him, like Cassius Mailula who moved to Toronto FC as a 21-year-old and discovered it was too soon.

Bafana now know their opponents for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals and Mofokeng would be hoping to be part of the squad.

Being a top performer in the Soweto Derby, showing some big match temperament could sway Broos to pick some players ahead of the crucial World Cup Qualifiers this year and the Afcon tournament taking place in December 2025.
