Al Ahly star Percy Tau told to man up amid Bafana Bafana criticism - 'He’s over 30 now and he’s experienced enough'

This year, Percy Tau has come under fire from Bafana Bafana fans for underperforming while in national team colours.

That has seen the 30-year-old not being included in recent national team camps but he is now back after being named in the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates forward Katlego Mashego has told Tau to man up amid all the criticism he has been getting from fans.

“I think we must not forget that Percy Tau is the best export in the past seven seasons or so. He played for some of the big teams in Europe and on the African continent, so that says a lot about his qualities,” Mashego told FARPost. 

“And with his criticism on social media, he’s over 30 now and he’s experienced enough, I’m sure he knows that he can’t please everyone. So he’s a big boy with a big character, so I’m sure these challenges are not something he can’t handle.”

Bafana coach Hugo Broos is expected to name his final squad for the 2025 Afcon qualifiers this week and it remains to be seen if Tau will make the final squad.

What is also to be seen is how the Al Ahly star and Broos will relate after the two appear to have fallen out.

Tau has been out of form for his club and has also been at his best for the national team since the 2023 Afcon finals.

Al Ahly face ZED in their next Egyptian Premier League match on Thursday and Tau will be hoping to start after being used as a substitute in recent games.

The attacker will also be waiting for Broos' final Bafana squad for the upcoming international matches.
