Agency responds with Kaizer Chiefs tipped to sign Nigeria-eligible Bafana Bafana defender for FREE as SuperSport United contract expires

Ime Okon is set to be a free agent soon, as his contract with SuperSport United is understood to be expiring at the end of June.

This makes him eligible to sign for any club, and Kaizer Chiefs appear, as per reports, to be his next destination.

The new Bafana Bafana defender's agency, Football First, has responded after reports indicated the youngster is close to signing a deal with Chiefs, as per Soccer Laduma.

The agency said that the player had not agreed to anything with any club amid rising speculation that Okon is headed to Naturena.

Okon, who is eligible to play for Nigeria, has reportedly emerged as Chiefs' top transfer target.

This has come at a time when head coach Nasreddine Nabi is expected to strengthen his squad and hopefully build on the Nedbank Cup success next season.

Okon has had trial moments with a number of European clubs, including FC Midtjylland of Denmark and Ukrainian heavyweights Dynamo Kyiv. After the trials, he did not ink deals with these clubs, and so he returned to Matsatsantsa.

Previous reports indicated that Okon had also attracted interest from unnamed clubs in Belgium and Croatia.

Given that he is set to be a free agent in a couple of weeks, this offers Chiefs an opportunity to swoop and complete the deal by signing the promising 21-year-old defender without many contractual obligations.

Whether Chiefs will take advantage of Okon's contract situation at SuperSport and sign him immediately is a question only the club's hierarchy can answer.
