Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has revealed he is not entirely satisfied despite a 3-0 win over Lioli FC in a CAF Champions League first preliminary showdown on Saturday.
Ouaddou said that had Pirates been clinical enough, they would have registered a win with a bigger scoreline than what they got at Toyota Stadium.
BackpageNot enough space
"I do not think like that (that Bucs are one step into the second preliminary round) because we have not finished the second leg," Ouaddou told SABC Sports.
"We did a good game; we respected the plan, and I congratulate the players. I cannot be 100% satisfied because we could have scored more goals, especially in the first half, where we did not manage to get the space to go forward," he added.
"But that was because of the tactics of the opponent, and they played well as well. But I am happy for the second half because we made some changes; we brought speed on the side and switched them in order to find some space."
BackpageMabasa trick
Again, Ouaddou explained why Mabasa was effective, as the striker scored a brace against the Lesotho outfit.
"We thought in the first half our midfielders were far from Mabasa, and I told you that he is a guy that wants some players to serve him, and we decided to bring somebody closer to him who could play some passes forward," the former Marumo Gallants coach continued.
"In the game against Stellenbosch, we brought (Tshepang) Moremi to serve him in the box.
"Now, it is good, and I am happy; we are going to rest because we have a very important game in the league."
BackpageBeginning of a better campaign?
Pirates have started their Champions League season with a convincing victory, and their fans, just like the players, are ambitious for a far better campaign.
Last season, they were so close but were eliminated by the eventual champions, Pyramids FC, who mounted a comeback in the second leg of the semi-final to reach the final.
Keen on matching or surpassing Jose Riveiro's record, Ouaddou must keep the hope that Pirates will reach the final this time around and even lift the trophy again.
BackpageThe winning run continues
The Sea Robbers have been on a good run across all competitions. They recently defended the MTN8 Cup, and in the Premier Soccer League, the Soweto giants are on a three-match winning streak.
Next is a PSL game against Siwelele FC on September 23, before the second leg action against Lioli on September 27.
