    WHAT HAPPENED?

Relebohile Mofokeng and Patrick Mswanganyi scored as Orlando Pirates beat former La Liga outfit Granada 2-0 at Marbella Football Center on Saturday.

It was their last friendly match of the Buccaneers' pre-season tour of Spain and the only victory in the four games they played.

Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou gives an assessment of their time in Spain after ending their camp on a high.

  • WHAT OUADDOU SAID

“I had all the time the trust from my players and we tried with my staff to give them confidence, to play, to train good, to give efforts and to stay united,” Ouaddou told Pirates’ media team.

“Step by step, we finished this camp with a victory. I think it is good because it helps the guys in terms of confidence to end with a victory.

“For me, I was not worried because of what we have seen since the beginning here in terms of training, in terms of football, the aim to go forward to create the chances we had so it's a positive thing.

“We are going to give some rest to the players, but we are very impatient to go back to Johannesburg to play in front of our fans who are waiting for us," added the Moroccan.

“They want to see this new team. They want to see them play, and we can't wait to see them and play in front of them.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In the four friendly matches they played in Spain, Pirates registered a defeat, two draws and one win.

Having managed to avoid losing three times might be a positive Ouaddou and his men take going back home.

While results from friendlies are usually something most teams read much into, the Buccaneers' run of form could be a statement of their intentions in the upcoming season.

    WHAT NEXT FOR PIRATES?

After enduring punishing weather in Marbella while doing intense training to try and gain match fitness, the Soweto giants will rest as Ouaddou suggested.

But it would be short-lived as they have to prepare for their first competitive match of the season, the MTN8 quarter-final clash with Polokwane City on August 2.
