World Cup Odds: Will VAR mean more penalties in Sunday's matches?

The introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) at the 2018 World Cup has created plenty of talking points.

Perhaps the most pivotal is the ability of the on-field official to go back and review potential penalty incidents if requested by the VAR team monitoring the game.

At the time of writing the tournament is just eight games old and already six penalties have been given, several of them after VAR consultation.

There should arguably have been another in Argentina’s draw with Iceland after Cristian Pavon was seemingly brought down in the area as the South American side pushed for a winning goal that didn’t materialise.

This new technology could create an interesting betting opportunity for eagle-eyed punters with some firms taking wagers on whether a spot-kick will be awarded during the course of the match.

A penalty awarded in all three Sunday World Cup matches - 33/1 (34.0)

Lionel Messi and Christian Cueva both missed their penalties on Saturday but dabblebet offer odds on the penalty simply being given by the referee, regardless of whether or not it subsequently results in a goal.

Given that VAR is already having a significant impact on matches, particularly when it comes to the awarding of penalties, this will no doubt be an interesting trend to keep an eye on and bookmakers will have to adapt if this short term trend becomes a longer standing pattern because of the extra scrutiny.

There could also be knock-on effects in other World Cup markets too, if more penalties are given because of the advent of such technology, the goal tallies of games could be set to rise as well as potential red cards given that is one of the other ways VAR can be employed.

These selections are eligible to be built into certain multiples, meaning punters can back all three of Sunday’s World Cup matches to see a penalty awarded at 33/1 (34.0).
