FAI leads tributes following tragic death of Irish footballer Ryan McBride

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has led tributes following the tragic death of Irish footballer Ryan McBride at the age of 27.

McBride, who was captain of League of Ireland club Derry City, was found dead at his home in Derry on Sunday evening just a day after leading the club to victory over Drogheda United. 

His passing has sent shockwaves through the Irish football community, prompting an outpouring of grief and the FAI has indicated that he will receive a tribute at the Republic of Ireland's World Cup qualifier against Wales on Friday.

"Irish football is in mourning with the loss of a true great of the game, with the shocking news about Ryan McBride's passing," said FAI CEO John Delaney. "I would like to pass on my deepest condolences to Ryan's family, friends, and his club, Derry City FC, for which he was their leader, their captain and their inspiration.

"On behalf of the FAI Board and everyone in the Association, I would like to offer our sympathies to all who were blessed to have known Ryan.

"Ryan's passing has left a deep shock throughout football. We will remember Ryan with a tribute at Friday night's FIFA World Cup qualifier against Wales."

President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, was one of many to send his condolences to McBride's family. "Along with all those who support Irish football, I express my sadness and condolences to the family of Derry City FC Captain Ryan McBride," said President Higgins.

Former Ireland and Manchester United defender Paul McGrath also posted a message of support to McBride's family. He wrote: "My thoughts are with the family, friends and club mates of Derry City captain Ryan McBride."

Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore was also moved by the news, sending his "sincere condolences" to the family and friends of the player.

The FAI has confirmed that Tuesday's league game between Derry City and Limerick has been postponed as a mark of respect to McBride and his family.
