Our man in Spain, Phil Kitromilides takes a look at the title odds in La Liga with the race to be crowned champions hotting up in the Primera Liga

Last year, Real Madrid won their last 12 games of the season, something that no side had ever done before.

It was not enough to see Zinedine Zidane's men crowned as champions with Barcelona winning the title on the final day of the campaign by a single point, but it did produce a title race when the championship looked to be a forgone conclusion.

While Los Blancos knew they had to win and hope that their Catalan rivals slip up the previous term, this year things are very much in the Madrid outfit's hands. The European champions sit two points clear of Barcelona with a game in hand and bet365 offer them as the clear favorites at 1/3 (1.33) to win their first La Liga title since 2012.

This, however, has been an extremely unpredictable season in the Spanish top flight and it feels as if there will be more swings of the pendulum between now and the end of the season. Madrid certainly seem to have the tougher run-in with the side still to face Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Sevilla.

All four of those matches are at home, however, where Los Blancos boast the best record in the division and remain the only unbeaten side at home in the Primera Division.

Of course we have already seen one historic comeback from Barcelona this season in the Champions League and if they were to turn things around in La Liga, it would surely be remembered as one of their most glorious triumphs.

The Blaugrana have not been at their best this season, yet boast the top two scorers in the division in Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez and if they can get a result at the Bernabeu (where they won 4-0 last season) they will be put real pressure on Madrid.

Barca are offered at 9/4 (3.25) to retain their title and their run-in looks more straight forward than Madrid's, although they still have to host Sevilla and Villarreal

Elsewhere, Sevilla's title hopes all but came to an end this weekend with a 3-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid. With their unexpected elimination from the Champions League it feels like Jorge Sampaoli's side are imploding a little and they have a job on their hands to secure third place in the table.

Eight points behind leaders Real Madrid, Sevilla are priced at 150/1 (151.00) for the title, while Atletico, who are 10 points off top spot, are offered at 250/1 (251.00)
