  • WHAT HAPPENED?

A lot has been expected of Gerrard's managerial career since his retirement; however, it is safe to say that the Liverpool legend's post-playing career has failed to live up to the hype. After a horror spell with Aston Villa, it seemed like a return to the Premier League was out of the question for Gerrard. However, his former Liverpool team-mate, Downing, has now revealed that Leeds United had considered making a move for Gerrard.

    WHAT DOWNING SAID

Downing told Flashscore who offer the latest sports betting apps: “I was at Leeds last year and there were a lot of rumours about him coming in there and at the time I thought Leeds would be a good fit. Not too far from his home. Big club, big expectations, a bit like Rangers if you like in terms of the pressure because Leeds have a big fan base and big demands. I know they definitely did speak to him before Farke got the job. It was him, Scott Parker and Farke.

“Farke got the job probably on his experience of getting teams promoted, which has been proven right. He's done a good job there.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gerrard started his managerial career with Liverpool's youth sides before he undertook his first senior coaching role with the Rangers. The Liverpool legend then got his big Premier League job with Aston Villa in 2021; however, with just 13 wins in 40 games, Gerrard was shown the door less than 12 months later. He then moved to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, but after a strong start, performances started dwindling for the England legend's side, and he parted ways with Al-Ettifaq after 18 months in charge.
