Sergio Aguero is coming out of retirement! Ex-Man City and Barcelona star to compete for $1 million cash prize in 2024 TST event against Wrexham, Borussia Dortmund and more in USA's 7-a-side tournament

The Argentina and Manchester City legend announced his retirement in December 2021 while contracted by Barcelona, after being advised by doctors to hang up his boots. He hasn't taken part in any competitive football since then, but the 35-year-old is set to make a big return in June after confirming he'll be playing at The Soccer Tournament, potentially facing up against teams such as Borussia Dortmund and Wrexham.

It's been confirmed by Manchester City that Aguero will be heading up an 'Agüero team' for the 7-on-7, $1 million, winner-take-all tournament, but right now it's still unclear who his team-mates will be. However, the TST hierarchy are clearly happy to be getting him on board, as founder and CEO Jon Mugar recently spoke out about the news, saying: "Not only is he one of the best players of all time, but he's also one of the fiercest competitors ever. He's coming to Cary to have fun and compete, which is exactly what TST is all about."

During Aguero's 18-year career, the Premier League icon scored a club-record 260 goals in 390 appearances for City, helping lead them to an incredible five league titles before departing in the summer of 2021.

The line-up of teams scheduled to take part in the 2024 tournament is gradually taking shape, and there are some exciting names on the list. The success of TST 2023 has already caused big stars such as Aguero, Heather O'Reilly, Ali Krieger and more to commit to this year's edition of the project. Fans of the new format will be desperate to hear who's next to be confirmed for the competition.
