    WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester City dominated the proceedings of the clash against the record Champions League winners after they opened the scoring through Rodrygo and eventually levelled the scores with a goal from Kevin De Bruyne in the 76th minute. However, despite their superiority, City were unable to get past Los Blancos and ended up losing when Mateo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva missed penalty kicks in the shootout.

  • WHAT RODRI SAID

Speaking after the match, Rodri said [via The Standard]: "Today I've only seen one team. In terms of defending, they defend and they knew how to suffer. We know how tough Real Madrid are, but in my opinion we should have gone through in terms of the chances and everything. But they know this competition and how to play. Congratulations to them.

"It is worse to try to find an explanation. They scored their only chance. Football does not pay attention to merit, it is only about putting the ball in the net. We did not expect them to be so, so far deep in their set up. We had the feeling that penalties suited them better.

"If we are more precise, we win the game. Madrid has won a tie that, in my opinion, we deserved to go through. It is their turn again, as usual. Now we have to get the boys up, we still have things to fight for."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

At the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night, the game saw Madrid try to defend their first-half lead against Pep Guardiola's juggernaut, and the move worked out as they managed to take the game to penalties after a 3-3 draw in the first leg and 1-1 in midweek. City's hopes of accomplishing the double treble were shattered as the Spanish powerhouses advanced to the semi-finals with a 4-3 victory from the spot.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR MAN CITY?

Last season's treble winners still have two competitions to fight for and stand as the favourites for both. They currently sit atop the Premier League and will take on Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday, April 20.
