Miguel Amiron is back with Atlanta United as MLS club confirms signing of Paraguayan star from Newcastle

Atlanta United confirmed Miguel Almiron's long-awaited return on Thursday, as he made the move back to MLS in a transfer from Newcastle United after six years in the Premier League. Almrion, 30, has signed a Designated Player deal that runs through 2027 with an option to 2028, reuniting a club and player that made history together back in 2018.

The Paraguayan star was part of Atlanta United's initial roster back in 2017 and was a key figure in the club's 2018 MLS Cup win in its sophomore season. In total, he scored 22 goals in 70 appearances for the club during his two seasons before making a big-money move to Newcastle in 2019. He went on to play 223 games for the Premier League club, scoring 30 goals in all competitions during his time in England.

As the Five Stripes continue this offseason's overhaul, the club has returned to hits heyday with the signing of Almiron, who, alongside Josef Martinez, spearheaded the best team in Atlanta's young history.

The club has rebuilt itself over the last year, though, with new coach Ronny Delia taking over heading into the 2025 season. In addition to Almiron, Atlanta has been linked with Middlesbrough star Emmanuel Latte Lath, who is reportedly set to join up with the club for a league-record fee.

Last season, Atlanta finished ninth in the Eastern Conference before providing an all-time MLS upset of Inter Miami in the first round of the MLS Playoffs. That was all they could muster, though, as the Five Stripes fell to Orlando City in the very next round.

Atlanta United will open their 2025 MLS season on Feb. 22 when they host CF Montreal at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Almiron's first game back at the club.
