  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Al Ahly played their second Club World Cup game in Group A on Thursday against Brazilian outfit Palmeiras at the MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford.

Following a goalless draw against Inter Miami, the Egyptian champions needed a win to stand a chance of advancing.

However, they were undone by Wessam Abou Ali's own goal and Flaco Lopez's strike to put their chances of progress in jeopardy.

Coach Jose Riveiro has now explained why it was tough for his team to get into the game after conceding.

  • WHAT RIVEIRO SAID

“One free kick and it was 1-0, then we lost the ball, and they scored another goal,” the 49-year-old told the media..

“I think the game was even before that, but they scored the goals.

“The match was beyond our capacity. We tried to come back after the weather interrupted with a new style of play, but we failed to create enough opportunities," Riveiro concluded.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Al Ahly will play Porto in their final Group A game, a must-win fixture for either side, having lost once and shared spoils once as well.

However, a win will not guarantee progress for the Red Devils; they will hope that Palmeiras or Inter Miami lose by a bigger margin in their last pool assignment.

A draw for the two top teams will lock Riveiro's men out.

The two competitive games have given Riveiro a clear picture of the ability and potential of some of his players.

The former Orlando Pirates tactician will now have to ensure he gets it right against Porto to ease the pressure from the fans.
