    WHAT HAPPENED?

    Orlando Pirates signed Oswin Appollis from Polokwane City, with the left winger joining a team that has Relebohile Mofokeng who plays in a similar role to him.

    Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has been struggling to have the two stars on the pitch at the same time, often substituting each other.

    But the Soweto giants coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has been trying to accommodate the wingers to play together in the friendly games the Buccaneers have been involved in Spain.

    Former Kaizer Chiefs and Pirates goalkeeper William Shongwe feels the duo can be fielded at the same time.

    WHAT SHONGWE SAID

    "Right now, results aren't the main objective. The coach is looking for a particular combination, and it appears he is still unsure about it," Shongwe told KickOff.

    "The arrival of Appollis has changed the team's structure. Mofokeng has been shifted to the right side to accommodate Appollis.

    "We don’t know if Mofokeng will be effective on the right. Yes, he scored against Pafos, but I didn't see the usual impact he has when playing on the left.

    "If Mofokeng plays wide on the right and the opposition’s full-back gets past him, he may become irrelevant to the play," added Shongwe who also played for Pirates.

    "This could overload Van Rooyen. However, if he plays as an inverted winger, he could help strengthen the midfield."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    The signing of the former SuperSport United player could be a hint that Pirates are preparing to lose Mofokeng who is a subject of transfer speculation. 

    In the event the 20-year-old leaves the Buccaneers this transfer window, Appollis will be his direct replacement. 

    That will also leave Appollis with a huge challenge to maintain the impact Mofokeng had as a player who positively influenced games.

    WHAT NEXT FOR APPOLLIS?

    The next few days will have Pirates fans remain anxious to see if Mofokeng will be transferred. 

    Meanwhile, Pirates conclude their tour of Spain with their last friendly match against Granada on Saturday.
