    WHAT HAPPENED?

The 28-year-old Darren Smith has been massive for Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro's former team Inter Turku.

In the 38 matches played since 2023 across all competitions, Smith scored 19 goals and managed four assists across all competitions.

It is interesting that Kaizer Chiefs snubbed him when he went there for trials a couple of years ago.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Owing to his decent exploits, the USL Championship outfit Detroit City FC showed interest.

Being a free agent worked in the South African's favour as there were no complications in finalising the deal.

He had done everything in Finland to prove he deserved another challenge elsewhere.

    WHAT NEXT?

Smith should give his best to settle immediately in the United States and hit the ground running.

If he gets it right, then Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos might be tempted to have him in his squad for future assignments.
