    WHAT HAPPENED?

    Mamelodi Sundowns academy players Omphemetse Sekgoto, Kamohelo Mereletse and Selwyn Stevens were on target as South Africa beat Comoros 3-0 in a Group C match of the Cosafa Under-17 Championships.

    Impressively, Sekgoto is 14 while Mareletse and Stevens were part of Manqoba Mngqithi's squad at the recent Home of Legends Cup in Gqeberha. 

    Chiefs reserve team co-head coach Vela Khumalo is South Africa's coach and his side is on course to book a place at the 2025 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations Cup finals.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    The exploits of the South Africa Under-17 team give hope for a bright future and promise a solid Bafana Bafana squad in years to come.

    It also gives positive marks to the development of players by Premier Soccer League clubs.

    This comes in a period in which South African football is already celebrating the emergence of the Orlando Pirates duo of Relebohile Mofokeng and Mohau Nkota, as well as the Sundowns trio of Kutlwano Letlhaku, Siyabonga Mabena and Malibongwe Khoza.

    Kaizer Chiefs' Mfundo Vilakazi, Wandile Duba and Mduduzi Shabalala are also the other emerging stars.

    WHAT NEXT?

    Amajimbos remain on course to being crowned Cosafa champions and are closer to qualifying for the Under-17 Afcon as they finish their Group C campaign against Mauritius on Monday. 

    Their bigger goal is qualifying for the 2025 Fifa Under-17 World Cup where they will be tested at a global level.
