    WHAT HAPPENED?

Khanyisa Mayo scored his first Algerian Ligue 1 for CR Belouizdad to help them beat ASO Chlef 2-0 at home on Sunday.

The South African grabbed Belouizdad's second goal eight minutes into the second as they moved to position eight from 13th on the table.

It was a follow-up by Mayo to last week's goal against Orlando Pirates in a Caf Champions League match at home.

MAYO'S TIME IN ALGERIA SO FAR

The former Cape Town Spurs attacker has now scored one goal in eight Ligue 1 games.

He also has a goal in three Champions League matches and scoring twice in Belouizdad's last two outings might be what he needed in terms of boosting his confidence.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mayo's goal against Pirates appears to have instilled confidence in him to find the back of the net on Sunday.

If he continues to play the way he has been doing, that could increase his chances of being selected by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos for the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers as well as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Broos has been a critic of Mayo going to Algeria as well as some South African players trekking to North Africa.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAYO?

The World Cup qualifiers resume in March 2025 and Mayo still has high-profile games in Algerian domestic competitions as well as the Champions League to prove himself to Broos and continue silencing his critics.

Turning himself into a prolific scorer again will help him revive his international career.
