    WHAT HAPPENED?

Stellenbosch handed Orlando Pirates their first PSL loss of the season on Sunday, which saw the Buccaneers drop to second place.

The game, played at Orlando Stadium on Sunday afternoon, was decided by a single goal from Devon Titus, securing three points for the Cape Winelands side and delivering perfect revenge.

One notable absence was Bafana Bafana international Fawaaz Basadien, with his place taken by former Kaizer Chiefs defender Omega Mdaka, who performed well.

Coach Steve Barker later explained the reason for Basadien’s absence.

    WHAT BARKER SAID

“Fawaaz Basadien became a father for the first time in the morning, so congratulations to him, and hence it gave Omega another opportunity to play, and he took the play,” Barker told the media.

“His wife was due during the week, and being a first-time father, he requested to stay at home to be with her in case she had the baby earlier in the week.

“We granted him that – and then we know over the weekend it would probably happen, so we gave him some time off to be with his wife.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Stellenbosch’s focus is on returning to action as soon as possible, with a demanding schedule ahead.

With both domestic and continental commitments, coach Barker emphasized the need for rest during the break to ensure the players return fresh.

The upcoming games will test their resilience, and Barker is confident that his squad will be ready.

Maintaining fitness and mental strength is crucial as they navigate their tight fixtures.

The team aims to continue their form and build momentum from the victory.

A break for rest is key to their continued success.
