    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns return to domestic football as they travel to Polokwane for a challenging clash against Carling Knockout Cup champions Magesi FC. The hosts, under new coach Owen Da Gama, previously defeated Sundowns in the cup final and will aim for another upset.

Miguel Cardoso’s side comes into the match high on confidence after sealing their spot in the CAF Champions League quarterfinals.

Former captain Hlompho Kekana shared his insights on what Sundowns can expect from Da Gama’s approach during an episode of the Pitchside Podcast.

Sundowns currently lead the DStv Premiership, three points ahead of Orlando Pirates, who have played the same number of games. The Brazilians aim to extend their lead and strengthen their position as defending champions.

    WHAT KEKANA SAID

“A warning to my boys,” said Hlompho Kekana on the Pitch Side Podcast. “They’re playing an Owen Da Gama team. Yes, they must be ready to be followed everywhere. Man-to-man is the system, the formation, and how he believes his team will win football matches. That irritates a lot - when you go in possession, someone is with you all the way.

"So you must make sure that you prepare your mind to know that it’s not gonna be a smooth one. But in as much as it’s not gonna be a smooth one, make sure that you win it. There will be opportunities because you’ve got quality, you’ve got structure, you’ve got personnel that can, you know, change the match for you.

"So make sure that in as much as you’re gonna have that man-to-man system or approach, once you get an opportunity, take it. Because it’ll be a match of less opportunities,” added Kekana.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With Orlando Pirates closely chasing, Sundowns will look to secure maximum points to maintain their league lead. This encounter provides the perfect chance to avenge their Carling Knockout Cup final loss to Magesi and also presents an opportunity to stretch Miguel Cardoso's unbeaten record since taking charge.

The Yellow nation is also awaiting to see if new signing Jayden Adams will be part of the matchday squad.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SUNDOWNS?

After qualifying for the quarterfinals of the Caf Champions League over the weekend, Sundowns now have almost two months of domestic football to focus on. After the Magesi FC match they move onto a Nedbank Cup fixture against Sibanye Golden Stars FC.

No doubt they will have one eye on the potential title six-pointer at Loftus Verfeld against Orlando Pirates on February 8.
