Mamelodi Sundowns tasted their first defeat at the 2025 Fifa Club World Cup after they were defeated 4-3 by Borussia Dortmund on Saturday at the TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Goals from Felix Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy, Jobe Bellingham and an own goal by Khuliso Mudau handed Dortmund the win. Lucas Ribeiro, Iqraam Rayners and Lebo Mothiba scored for Sundowns.
Meanwhile, Sundowns looked more ambitious and hungry in the early stages of the match, and their efforts were rewarded with an opener in the 11th minute.
Ribeiro launched an individual run as he beat his marker, and although he had options on the right and on the left side, he decided to fire from inside the box and scored with a precise strike.
However, Masandawana conceded in the 19th minute in a very unlikely way. Williams' poor short pass was intercepted by Nmecha, who fired into the net as the Sundowns goalkeeper remained on the ground, visibly disappointed as Dortmund celebrated.
Williams saved the day for the Tshwane giants when he made a huge save in the 19th minute to deny Guirassy. The Dortmund forward found himself in a very promising position and fired his shot, but Williams managed to stop it.
After being denied by a fine save by Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Guirassy eventually found the back of the net in the 34th minute. Julian Brandt spotted Guirassy, who rose highest to head into the net to give the Bundesliga side the lead.
Dortmund extended their lead in the 45th minute when Bellingham struck past a helpless Williams. The Sundowns keeper managed to clear the initial cross, but it went as far as where Bellingham was, who fired into the net.
The situation went from bad to worse for Sundowns when Khuliso Mudau scored an own goal in the 59th minute.
Although they were trailing by a considerable margin, the Premier Soccer League heavyweights kept fighting on and reduced the scoreline when Rayners scored their second goal two minutes after the hour mark.
Mothiba, a second-half substitute, scored the third goal in the 90th minute for the hard-fighting Masandawana. Dortmund climbed to the top of the Group F standings, while Sundowns slipped down to the second spot.

Bellingham, who signed for the German side from Sunderland, scored his first goal for Dortmund.
The 19-year-old is hoping to follow in the footsteps of his elder brother, Jude Bellingham, who made his name at Dortmund before he signed for Real Madrid.

Perhaps this is a game that Williams would want to forget about. His mistake gave Dortmund the chance to equalise, and the German outfit used that momentum gained from the equaliser to fight and score more.
The mistake by the experienced goalkeeper arguably demotivated his teammates, who were hitherto fighting, toe-to-toe, with the former Bundesliga champions.
Indeed, a day to forget for Williams.
