    WHAT HAPPENED?

Al Ahly signed Bafana Bafana international Percy Tau in the 2021/22 edition.

The now 30-year-old played a crucial role as the Red Devils dominated domestically and abroad.

During his stint with the Egyptian giants, Tau has won 11 major titles both locally and in Africa.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Earlier in the year, there were reports that Tau had fallen out with coach Marcel Kohler; it was claimed the attacker was unhappy after being overlooked in certain instances.

Kaizer Chiefs and Wydad Athletic Club were heavily linked with the experienced attacker but the deal did not materialize.

Recently, there were rumours that the Red Devils wanted to compensate Tau by paying him R4.5 million to terminate his current deal, but the player wants double the amount.

Apart from Chiefs, Zamalek have been severally linked with the Lion of Judah but midfielder Reda Abdel-Aal, who played for the latter, insists the South African is done.

    WHAT ABDEL-AAL SAID

"From my point of view, Percy Tau gave everything he had with the Al Ahly team in the past seasons and will not be technically useful to Zamalek or Pyramids, even if [he is] signed for free," he told El-Bermo show.

"Percy Tau will look in the coming period to play in the Gulf in order to secure his future after retiring from football permanently."

    WHAT NEXT?

At 30, Tau has several seasons in top-level football before calling it a day.

He has already missed the last two international breaks, and Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos clearly stated he will not consider him with limited club game time.

The attacker has no option but to get another top team to represent.
