    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Sundowns midfielder Brent Carelse has challenged Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs to challenge for the Premier Soccer League title.

Carelse fears that Sundowns could dominate the league for the next five or seven years if the Soweto titans fail to improve.

    WHAT CARELSE SAID

"Sundowns is not going to wait for other teams to improve. If Sundowns are going to run away with the league for the next five to seven years, that's because they are doing the right things," Carelse told KickOff.

"I'm putting the marker for your Pirates, Chiefs, Stellenbosch, AmaZulu, and all these other teams; they need to improve. Sundowns try to improve after every season.

"It's for other teams to wake up and say, 'Look, we also need to invest in our club.' But I don't think anyone is going to topple them anytime soon. Maybe next season it will be called the Premier Sundowns League (PSL), because sihamba ngayo ne league haha (we're running away with this league)," the former Cape Town Spurs midfielder boasted."

    WHAT IS MORE

The former SuperSport United midfielder added that Sundowns cannot be blamed for being dominant because other clubs have failed to improve.

"If you're not trying to improve, then what are you doing? Sundowns, even if people are complaining about them dominating and 'the league being boring,' I don't think that's true," Carelse continued.

"They're trying to improve every season so they can go to the CAF Champions League final and go to the Club World Cup. Those are the things the club wants; that's why they're successful."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sundowns secured their record-extending eighth PSL title after yet another dominant season despite challenges faced at the beginning of the season.

Pirates attempted to wrest the title from the Tshwane giants but were unable to in the end. This is the same scenario witnessed in the previous campaign.

On the other hand, Chiefs were not among the league's title challengers, given that they struggled and eventually finished out of the top eight.

WHAT NEXT FOR SUNDOWNS, CHIEFS, AND PIRATES?

Sundowns still have some more assignments, given that they have not concluded the Champions League campaign against Pyramids yet.

Thereafter, they will focus on the Fifa Club World Cup campaign that will begin on June 14.

Pirates have one game to go as they are set to face Magesi FC on May 28 and Chiefs' campaign has come to an end.
