Polokwane City expose Mamelodi Sundowns as Manqoba Mngqithi’s gamble backfires with zero shots on target

Mamelodi Sundowns lost their winning streak after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Polokwane City, with Bulelani Nikani scoring late in the game at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Coach Manqoba Mngqithi made eleven changes to the starting lineup, which impacted the team’s fluidity, character, and attacking threat as they failed to register a single shot on target.

The defending champions also lost Siyabonga Mabena and Tashreeq Matthews to injuries, leaving them without any real spark throughout the match.

Polokwane City controlled the game and kept Masandawana on the back foot, with Thabang Matuludi proving to be a constant threat.

This loss marked Sundowns' first away defeat since September 2022, when they fell to SuperSport United.

The defeat leaves Orlando Pirates at the top of the table with a three-point lead over Sundowns. Meanwhile, the win lifts Polokwane City to ten points, placing them in fourth position on the log.

Thabang Matuludi showed why he drew transfer interest in the off-season, delivering a strong defensive and attacking performance.

He kept Mabena quiet and had shots that tested Sundowns goalkeeper Dennis Onyango.

Manqoba Mngqithi suffered his first league loss, dropping crucial points with the eleven changes proving costly.

This is his third defeat in all competitions since taking over as head coach.
