    WHAT HAPPENED?

Polokwane City coach Phuti Mohafe is aiming to transform the club into a stable mid-table contender after defeating Kaizer Chiefs in a PSL match at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.

Rise and Shine climbed to third place in the Premier Soccer League table after securing a hard-fought 2-0 win over the Glamour Boys.

Mohafe now envisions Polokwane City as a top-eight team, asserting that he no longer views his team as a small side in the league.

    WHAT MOHAFE SAID

"Our target is to finish in the top eight, so we can't lose matches and expect us to remain in the top eight. By winning matches, it tells us that we will still be in the top eight," Mohafe told journalists.

"We don't have to look down on ourselves and say we are still a small team. We have to go and perform with other teams because the points are the same.

"It doesn't matter how you get them, you get them from small teams, you get it from the so-called big teams, it's still the same. So going into the top three it presently cements our top eight spot. We just need to continue working."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The victory against a struggling Chiefs marked Polokwane City’s fifth win in the league this season thus far. They have also drawn two and lost three times after ten matches.

Mohafe has been doing exceptionally well since taking charge of Rise and Shine following Lehlohonolo Seema's exit in November 2023.

The Limpopo-born coach has previously bested Manqoba Mngqithi by defeating Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in a league match last month and this shows he is doing a good job for himself and the team.

    WHAT NEXT FOR POLOKWANE CITY?

It will be interesting to see if Mohafe and his squad can sustain their impressive momentum and remain in the top eight until the end of the season.

The Limpopo-based team still has 20 PSL matches left to play and ensure the coach's aspirations eventually materialize.

Polokwane will be aiming to make it two consecutive wins when they clash against the in-form Marumo Gallants on December 15.
