Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns overshadow Kaizer Chiefs in PSL awards nominees

Contestants in various categories of the Premier Soccer League awards are now known after being announced on Tuesday.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

    The nominees for the 2024/25 PSL awards were confirmed, featuring notable names across various categories.

    From the big gong the PSL Player of the Season, to the best performers in the National First Division, were announced by the league.

  • CHIEFS DOMINATE NEDBANK CUP NOMINEES

    Three Amakhosi stars are vying for the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament with Inacio Miguel, Pule Mmodi and Gaston Sirino being nominated.

  • PIRATES YOUNGSTERS THE MOST PROMISING IN THE NEDBANK CUP

    Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Relebohile Mofokeng and former Buccaneers attacker Mohau Nkota are battling for Promising Player in the Nedbank Cup.

    Magesi FC goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze comes up against Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams and Orlando Pirates' Sipho Chaine for the Goalkeeper of the Season gong.

    Mamelodi Sundowns central defender Grant Kekana, Orlando Pirates centre-back Nkosinathi Sibisi and Stellenbosch's Thabo Moloisane are the nominees for the Defender of the Season award.

    Two Pirates starlets, Mofokeng and Nkota, plus Sundowns defender Malibongwe Khoza are the Young Player of the Season nominees.

    Stellenbosch tactician Steve Barker is up against former Pirates coach Jose Riveiro and Sundowns' Miguel Cardoso, who arrived at Chloorkop last December.

    Sekhukhune midfielder Keletso Makgalwa made a surprise appearance on the names vying for the big gong and could be named the PSL Footballer of the Season.

    He joins Sundowns' Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Mofokeng for the top award.

    The nominees vying for the Players' Player of the Season are the same as those for the Footballer of the Season.

    The nominations could act as a reflection of how some teams performed in different competitions last season.

    Chiefs have just three players in the nominations, and they all appear in just one category, the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament, a competition the Soweto giants won.

    Sundowns and Pirates dominate after finishing as PSL champions and runner-up, respectively.

    For now, debate continues to rage amongst fans as they predict their favourites from the nominees.
