    WHAT HAPPENED?

After weeks of uncertainty, the PSL has officially ruled that Royal AM will not participate in this season’s Nedbank Cup. The club had multiple fixtures postponed due to legal battles between SARS and owner Shauwn Mkhize. Royal AM last played a competitive match in December, leaving fans and players in limbo.

The PSL’s decision paves the way for the last-16 fixture between Sekhukhune United and Milford FC. This match is set for March 2 at 15h00 at Princess Magogo Stadium. The winner will advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face Mamelodi Sundowns.

    WHAT PSL SAID

The PSL statement reads: "The NSL Executive Committee convened on Monday to consider further representations from the Curator and management of Royal AM Football Club.

"Having reviewed these representations, the Executive Committee, in concurrence with Royal AM and the Curator, resolved that Royal AM Football Club will take no further part in the Nedbank Cup competition this season, in the interest of time.

"The Nedbank Cup fixture (number 21) between Milford FC and Sekhukhune United FC has been scheduled for 15h00 on Sunday, 2 March 2025, at Princess Magogo Stadium. The League will confirm ticketing information in due course."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The league’s decision reinforces its commitment to fair play, its sponsors, and the integrity of the competition. This marks the first time in PSL history that a team has been eliminated from a cup tournament without playing a single game.

For clubs like Milford FC, who are pushing for promotion in the second tier, this provides clarity and a much-needed opportunity. The decision also strengthens the credibility of the Nedbank Cup as a prestigious tournament with strict governance.

It reassures sponsors that the league values professionalism and will uphold the tournament’s integrity. Additionally, it maintains competitive balance by ensuring that teams earn their progression on the field, not through administrative delays.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SEKHUKHUNE?

Sekhukhune United now shifts focus to their upcoming league clash against Mamelodi Sundowns. Both teams are coming off strong victories, with Babina Noko sitting third on the table while Sundowns continue their dominant run.

The big question is: Can Lehlohonolo Seema halt the Miguel Cardoso-driven juggernaut? A positive result could boost Sekhukhune’s confidence ahead of their Nedbank Cup quarter-final. Meanwhile, Sundowns will look to maintain their grip on both league and cup competitions.
