    WHAT HAPPENED?

South Africa U20 national team head coach Raymond Mdaka has announced a preliminary squad of 38 players for the upcoming 2025 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast.

Mdaka has put together a formidable preliminary squad, which features Kaizer Chiefs players Mfundo Vilakazi and Naledi Hlongwane, and Mamelodi Sundowns winger Kutlwano Letlhaku.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The U20 Afcon finals will consist of 12 teams. Amajita secured their spot in the tournament by winning the Cosafa U20 Championship in October 2024.

Chiefs attacking midfielder Vilakazi might not participate in the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates, scheduled for May 3, if he makes it into Mdaka's final squad.

Pirates reserve team captain Mbekezeli Mbokazi is now part of the Bucs first team after signing his first professional contract late last year.

    WHAT NEXT?

Mdaka will soon begin preparing his team for the continental tournament, which will be held in Ivory Coast from 26 April to 18 May 2025.

Before that, the former Marumo Gallants coach will have to trim down his squad and it will be interesting to see who will be left out, given that the team is made up of quality players.
