    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns secured their spot in the Nedbank Cup’s last 16 on Saturday evening with a victory over Sibanye Golden Stars, a Safa Division side from the Free State.

Keagan Johannes, who recently joined the club from SuperSport United, made his debut after struggling with injuries since his arrival.

The South African junior international finally showcased his skills and reflected on his performance with the club's media department post-match.

He was thrilled to have completed his first full 90 minutes, emphasising how the game served as a stepping stone in his career.

Despite facing initial challenges with match fitness, the young defender is optimistic about building on this performance to contribute more to the team.

The debut marks a turning point for him as he looks to establish himself among Sundowns’ elite squad.

    WHAT JOHANNES SAID

Keagan Johannes said on Mamelodi Sundowns TV: “In my first 90, it was a tough one, obviously with conditioning and all of that, but yeah, we got through it.

"I rewatched the game to see what I need to work on and see what I need to improve on. But I think overall the game was quite good for myself and obviously for the team as well. We obviously through to the next round and I think, yeah, good 90 minutes. I think for myself, that was a building block, so from now on onwards, obviously we build from that.”

He added, “It was a, it was a tough game for us. Obviously, we didn’t know what to expect about the opponent, but we had to take the game professionally and give it our best. You know, we allowed them to get into the game a bit towards the end, but obviously, we had to show our quality and, and just show that we are Mamelodi Sundowns and we can do well.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Cape Town-born defender, who can operate as a centre back and a right-back, faces stiff competition in both positions.

At right-back, he is up against Bafana Bafana internationals Khuliso Mudau and Thapelo Morena, while in central defence, he must contend with Grant Kekana and Mothobi Mvala.

With his first official game under his belt, Johannes will need to demonstrate consistent improvement to catch the eye of coach Miguel Cardoso.

The young player’s versatility is an asset, but hard work and standout performances will be necessary to secure a starting role.

Johannes' commitment to personal growth and learning could make him a valuable option for Sundowns in the future.

The debut gives him a solid foundation, but greater consistency and adaptation will determine his long-term role in the squad.
