    WHAT HAPPENED?

Percy Tau’s time at Al Ahly appears to be over. Al Ahly’s sporting director, Mohamed Ramadan, has begun discussions with the attacker to encourage him to exit during the upcoming transfer window, allowing him to leave on a free transfer rather than waiting for his contract to end.

With only eleven minutes played in the league this season, it’s clear that he no longer fits into coach Marcel Koller’s plans for the Red Devils. Instead, the club is eager to make room for a new foreign player, as they prepare for major competitions such as the Club World Cup.

For Tau, who once held the promise of an illustrious run with Al Ahly, this decision marks a disappointing chapter in his career in Egypt.

    WHAT IS REPORTED IN EGYPT

According to Al-Gomhor, Al Ahly's sporting director, Ramadan, is actively negotiating with Tau, urging him to leave in January rather than waiting until his contract ends.

Al Ahly’s leadership aims to grant Tau a free transfer so he can determine his own future while allowing the club to bring in new talent for upcoming tournaments, including the Club World Cup.

Coach Koller reportedly does not intend to rely on Tau for future plans, thus accelerating the discussions around Tau’s exit.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The South African forward’s misfortunes in Egypt have cost him dearly, including his spot on the Bafana Bafana roster.

Hugo Broos has been reluctant to call him up, citing his lack of regular playtime as a key concern.

Tau’s time with the Red Devils was supposed to solidify his legacy, but limited appearances and recurring injuries have left him sidelined, both in Egypt and in the national team.

The push to release him in January underscores Al Ahly’s urgency to make a fresh start and hints that the club sees little future in Tau’s contributions.

This outcome, while hard for the Bafana Bafana international, could open the door for his long-awaited return to South African football—potentially with Kaizer Chiefs.

    WHAT IS NEXT FOR TAU

As Tau nears an exit from Al Ahly, he may finally have a chance to reignite his career back home.

Chiefs have shown interest in the playmaker, potentially giving him a fresh platform to return to form and prove himself on familiar turf.

If the release goes through in January, he will have the opportunity to dictate his own future, possibly reigniting his Bafana Bafana prospects and reclaiming the star status he once held.

A move back to South Africa could offer the reset he desperately needs.
