Kaizer Chiefs legend frustrates FC Barcelona icons Lionel Messi & Luis Suarez as ex-South Africa Under-23 star completes 90 minutes in log leaders Philadelphia Union's clash with Inter Miami

Philadelphia Union blew away a 2-0 lead to allow Lionel Messi's Inter Miami to come back and force a 3-3 draw at Subaru Park on Sunday.

Messi scored one of Inter Miami's goals as his side is sixth in the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference.

Bradley Carnell's Philadelphia Union are a point clear at the top and Sunday's match saw former Stellenbosch FC defender Olwethu Makhanya playing 90 minutes at the heart of defence, dealing with Messi and Luis Suarez's raids.

Since taking over as Philadelphia's coach in January 2025, the former Kaizer Chiefs left-back has been in charge of 17 games, including 15 MLS Eastern Conference games.

Carnell has led his side to nine wins, three draws and as many defeats, having also guided them to two wins in the US Open Cup.

That has left the 48-year-old former Orlando Pirates assistant coach in a space to be considered for a role as a future Bafana Bafana coach.

Makhanya has featured in 13 of Philadelphia Union's 15 MLS matches, starting eight of them.

This is some vast improvement for the 21-year-old centre-back who was playing for his club's reserve side last season.

He has been positioning himself to attract the attention of Bafana coach Hugo Broos.

However, Philadelphia Union could lose top spot if second-placed Cincinnati beat Atlanta United on Monday.

Carnell and his men will be back in action on Thursday when they visit Cassius Mailula's parent club Toronto FC.
