    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has stepped forward to defend Brandon Petersen after the Amakhosi goalkeeper was dismissed during the Nedbank Cup quarter-final game against Stellenbosch FC.

The Glamour Boys triumphed over Steve Barker's team 3-1 to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament following a heated encounter at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday evening.

However, Chiefs' Petersen received a red card in the 77th minute while he was on the bench. Consequently, Nabi believes his keeper did not warrant the dismissal.

    WHAT NABI SAID

"About the red card, I don’t really know what happened because Brandon didn’t say anything," Nabi told the media after the match as quoted by iDiski Times.

"He didn’t complain or talk to the referee. He was talking to his goalkeeper teammate.

"He was also doing warm-up because we thought that the goalkeeper [Bruce Bvuma] was injured."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Petersen last appeared for Chiefs in December during the club's loss to Polokwane City at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. Since that time, Nabi has been relying on Bruce Bvuma in goal.

The Cape Town-born goalkeeper has faced fierce competition under the Tunisian coach, with Bvuma being the first-choice and new keeper Fiacre Ntwari waiting in the wings.

The 30-year-old Petersen has only had three appearances for the Naturena-based club this season across all competitions.

    WHAT NEXT?

Given Bvuma's recent consistent performances, it is very unlikely that the former now-defunct Bidvest Wits FC goalkeeper was going to get some game time anytime soon in any case.

Chiefs next face Cape Town City in a PSL clash on Wednesday.
