    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Kaizer Chiefs forward Junior Khanye has admitted that he got his prediction on the club's first five 2025/26 Premier Soccer League games wrong.

Khanye said he thought Chiefs would only win one of the first five games of the season, but Amakhosi have been resilient; they have won four games and drawn in another, forcing Khanye to eat humble pie.

    WHAT KHANYE SAID

“I am someone who takes accountability and responsibility, and I admit that I got my prediction wrong about Chiefs’ opening five matches of the season,” Khanye told Soccer Laduma.

“I had said they would probably only win one game, and I was basing that on their performances over the past two seasons, because things just weren’t happening for them then. But they proved me wrong with how well they started this season, and compliments to the team," he added.

"Chiefs have improved a lot, and I have been particularly impressed with their defence. It will be interesting to see how they fare as the season progresses, but the defence has been a big factor in their strong start. Well done to the backline and to goalkeeper Brandon Petersen for leading the side to such an impressive beginning!”

    WHAT IS MORE

Although Khanye is impressed by his former club, he believes they did not deserve to win the game against Golden Arrows.

“As a team as a whole, Chiefs deserve the compliments coming their way because they have really improved," the retired forward stated.

"They’ve even been winning games on the road – like their impressive win against Stellenbosch, although I don’t think Stellies played very well in that game, especially after going down to 10 men early on," he explained.

"Against Sundowns, Chiefs also did well to get a draw by capitalising on Sundowns’ slow start to the season. And well done to them for beating Golden Arrows away – even though I felt they didn’t quite deserve the win in that match, they took their chance and scored the important goal."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Khanye has been one of Chiefs' top critics, but the club's performance has proved him, and probably more, wrong.

Amakhosi remain unbeaten after five games, although they have dropped points once, from a 0-0 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

The Soweto giants will be back in action after the FIFA international break, as they are scheduled to face Sekhukhune United on September 16.

This is expected to be quite a tough challenge for the Glamour Boys because Babina Noko are unbeaten so far, just like Chiefs.
