  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Fernandes has been one of the best players in the Premier League over the course of the last few years, despite Manchester United having struggled for form and stability. Over the last few months, reports have suggested that the Portuguese midfielder is desperate to win major titles and could leave the Red Devils to do so.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fernandes has been linked with a move to 15-time European champions Real Madrid as Los Blancos look to improve their midfield ahead of next season. However, Manchester United boss Amorim has now insisted that the Red Devils captain will not leave the club in the summer while stressing his importance to the squad.

    WHAT AMORIM SAID

Speaking to the media, Amorim said: “No, it’s [move to Real Madrid] not going to happen."

On Fernandes wanting to win titles, he added: "That is the challenge. I want Bruno here because we want to win the Premier League again, so we want the best players. He’s [30] but still so [fit], plays 55 games every season and between assists and goals, he’s there for 30 at least, so he’s not going anywhere.

"We are in control of the situation and I feel that he is really happy here. Sometimes, the frustration that everybody sees and [they] maybe say is not a good thing in a captain, but it’s a sign he wants this [success] so bad. He’s not going anywhere because I’ve already told him.”

  • WHAT NEXT FOR FERNANDES?

Fernandes has continued to perform at a high level for the Red Devils this season, and he will aim to deliver again as they chase glory in the Europa League. United will return to action on Tuesday night in the Premier League when they face Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
