Kaizer Chiefs secured a 1-0 win over their arch-rivals Orlando Pirates during a DStv Diski Challenge match held on Sunday at the Dr. Molemela Stadium.
This means Amakhosi completed a season double over their rivals to overtake Stellenbosch at the top.
Meanwhile, Chiefs were dominant in the early stage of the encounter and could have scored the opening goal inside the first five minutes, but Siphesihle Tati was denied by the post.
The away side scored in the 13th minute, but Imaad Hendricks' goal did not stand as he was flagged for being offside.
Amakhosi were dealt a blow in the 17th minute when Ofentse Kgosana got injured and was replaced by Xolani Cossa.
Despite their goal being dismissed earlier, Chiefs kept on fighting and were awarded a penalty in the 24th minute. Hendricks was brought down by Pirates' Mmatlou Sepale in the box, and the referee had no option but to award a spot kick. However, Aden McCarthy could not beat Pirates' goalkeeper Bayanda Zulu.
For the remaining part of the game, Pirates had to do the job with 10 men after Sepale was shown a straight red card for his foul on Hendricks.
At the half-hour mark, Pirates made a change as Thuto Sesipi was withdrawn and replaced by Simphiwe Selepe.
Chiefs intensity and dominance paid off in the 65th minute when McCarthy scored from the spot kick. Pirates' defender Moses Mphekgoane fouled Hendricks resulting in another penalty for the visitors. For the second attempt, it is McCarthy, a son of former Mamelodi Sundowns' star Fabian McCarthy, who had the last laugh as he beat Zulu.
