BackpagePeter Shalulile is just four goals shy of Siyabonga Nomvete's record as the PSL's all-time top goalscorer. The Namibian striker currently sits on 125 goals and is closing in on history. Since joining Mamelodi Sundowns in September 2020, he has established himself as one of the league's most lethal forwards.
Over five seasons, he has won multiple individual awards and played a key role in Sundowns' dominance. Former club legend Roger Feutmba has weighed in on Shalulile’s abilities and future, suggesting he has the talent to play in Europe's top leagues.
Former Cameroon and KV Kortrijk star Feutmba spoke to Soccer Laduma about the Namibian's potential and the opportunities that still exist for him.
Gallo"Even before he joined Sundowns, Shalulile could have gone to Europe and would have made it there. You know Sundowns don't just buy any player. They buy quality. That means he was a top striker even before joining Sundowns. He has shown his potential that he can play anywhere and score goals. He has contributed to the growth of Sundowns and that has seen him winning the top goalscorer as well as Player of the Season awards and that quality is good enough for him to play in Europe, and even in England. Even now, he can still play in the English Premier League," said Feutmba as reported by SoccerLaduma.
"I think he didn't go about two seasons ago because of choices. Life is about choice. Maybe it was not his choice at that time. Maybe he has his own reasons but it's possible he can still make it in England as a striker. If you see how Munetsi started after leaving Orlando Pirates, going to France and now at Wolves, it proves that he has what it takes and the same could have been to Peter (Shalulile), but as I have said, maybe it was not his choice at that time or no good offers came through. But it's not too late, he can still make it in England, even now.
"You know he has built a name for himself while playing for Sundowns. You cannot talk about top strikers at Sundowns without mentioning Shalulile. So, maybe there was no good offer to go Europe but now that there is the chance for him to go to Saudi Arabia (as per reports) he can still make more money. Why not? You know, being a top striker is not about being skillful. It's about timing, moves and technique in the box, and scoring goals. Shalulile has all those attributes which makes him a top striker for any club and he can still make it in England. Though, now there is the chance of making more money in the Middle-East for him," Feutmba concluded.
With Shalulile’s contract nearing its end and no official announcement about an extension, speculation about his next move is growing. This could be his chance to test himself abroad, having already proven himself in South African and continental football.
Whether he chooses to chase the PSL goalscoring record or explore new challenges remains to be seen. Interest from Saudi Arabia is also a possibility, presenting a different kind of opportunity. Either way, his future is one of the biggest talking points in South African football right now.
Mamelodi SundownsSundowns travel to the City of Roses to take on Marumo Gallants in a tricky encounter. Both teams favor a possession-based style, making for an intense tactical battle.
The Brazilians will look to bounce back from recent league setback and maintain their lead at the top of the standings.
Shalulile will be eager to add to his goal tally as he inches closer to Nomvete’s record. With momentum on their side, Sundowns will aim for a dominant display to stay ahead in the title race.
